Photos: National Guardsmen Deploy to Afghanistan
Families gathered at Camp Fretterd Military Reservation in Reisterstown Monday morning to bid farewell to their loved ones, members of the Maryland Army National Guard and the Virginia National Guard, who were headed to Afghanistan by way of Mississippi.
More than 35 members of the Maryland Army National Guard and 30 members of the Virginia National Guard will deploy to Afghanistan after several weeks of pre-mobilization in Mississippi.
Family and friends, along with Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, gathered at Camp Fretterd on Monday morning for a deployment ceremony before the soldiers headed to Camp Shelby, the largest state-owned training site in the nation. The deployment, which is expected to last one year, is part of the international Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Joint Command -Security Partnering II (SYPII).
