Friends and family of breast cancer patient Shirley Scott held a pink bikini car wash at Sportman's Hall Sunday to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Drivers slowed down on Route 30 Sunday afternoon as they passed Sportman’s Hall in Upperco, and many opted to stop at the curious site they saw. Nothing pulls random drivers off the road like pink bikinis.
Friends and family of breast cancer patient Shirley Scott held the event to raise money in order to participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for The Cure walk this September in Washington, D.C. To participate in the three-day, 60-mile trek, the group must raise at least $2,300 in donations for both Tish Gardner and Debbie Valencia.
Scott, who recently completed her last radiation treatment, was diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time this past January, 11 years to the day after doctors had told her she had beaten the disease.

When they heard the news of her latest diagnosis, family friends like Gardner decided they wanted to help. Gardner has been keeping herself busy raising money since she learned of Scott's diagnosis.
"Even though we're not related, they're family to me, and when I found out about it I wanted to do anything I could," she said.

She also helped organize two other fundraisers in the last few months, including one at Cheer’s Lounge in Eldersburg and a late-night roller skating party at the Sportsman’s Hall.
On Sunday, dozens of cars lined up to get a good scrub down and to donate some cash to the cause. The group was able to raise about $5,000.
