Scaffolding Erected at Baltimore's Washington Monument

BALTIMORE, MD (March 25, 2014) – A milestone has been reached at Mount Vernon’s Washington Monument as the scaffolding has been completely erected and construction manager of the project, Lewis Contractors, is set to begin the repair work.

After passing inspection, the scaffolding around the 178-foot structure is ready for use. With the scaffolding complete, the first step in the restoration process will involve the inspection of the 16-foot George Washington statue that stands at the top of the monument. Now that the sculpture can be closely studied, the project’s conservationist will define a detailed scope of work needed for its restoration—all work to the statue will be completed while it remains in its place at the top of the monument.

Scaffolding around the monument was erected in such a way that every square foot of the structure can be reached in order to receive the proper restorations. The monument will undergo full conservation work including repointing, Dutchman repairs, grout injection, surface patches, and repairing of spalled corners.

Work is scheduled for completion by July 4, 2015— in time for the bicentennial of the laying of the monument’s cornerstone.
