Policewoman Shot In Parkville IDed As Florida Chief's Daughter

The Baltimore County police officer who was shot Thursday has been identified as the daughter of Sarasota Police Chief Bernadette DiPino.

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — The officer shot at a home in Parkville Thursday has been identified as the daughter of a police chief in Florida who is also a veteran of the Baltimore County Police Department. The injured officer was hospitalized in serious condition Thursday afternoon, and police reported Thursday night that she is expected to survive her injuries.

"Sarasota Police Chief Bernadette DiPino was notified that her daughter, an officer with the Baltimore County Police Department in Maryland, was shot in the line of duty," said Genevieve Judge of the Sarasota Police Department, on Thursday night.

"She was seriously injured and transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center where she is currently undergoing surgery," Judge said of the chief's daughter.

The caller hung up on the 911 dispatcher, according to police, and authorities were unable to reach anyone despite repeated attempts to call back.

Arriving officers were confronted by a man who started shooting at them, Baltimore County Police Chief Terrence Sheridan said at a press conference Thursday afternoon.

At least one officer went into the home and encountered the suspect, police said. The officer was shot once in the upper body, authorities reported, and the suspect was shot at least once.

The man, who has not yet been identified, was found deceased inside the home from an apparent gunshot wound, according to investigators.

The circumstances leading up to the death and injury remain under investigation.

The officer was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center and was immediately taken into surgery, police reported after 4 p.m.

The mother of the injured officer traveled to Maryland to be with her daughter, according to her agency's spokesperson. DiPino has served as chief of police in Sarasota since 2012 but is well known among Maryland law enforcement officials, having served as chief of police in Ocean City, Maryland, for nearly a decade. She also began her career in the Baltimore County Police Department.

"The Sarasota Police Department asks for the chief's privacy to be respected during this difficult time," Judge said on behalf of DiPino.

"I am praying for a full recovery and ask residents to keep the officer and their family in our thoughts," County Executive Johnny Olszewski said in a statement.

Olszewski and Sheridan held a press conference at 4:30 p.m. outside shock trauma in Baltimore:
