LETTER: Boteler on Veteran's Day

The 8th District Delegate speaks up about Veteran's Day, and a celebration event in Carney.

Delegate Joe Boteler submitted the following letter as an editorial. The letter is printed in full and unedited below:

Dear Friend,

November is usually the month that people give thanks for the blessings they have in life. It is also a time we remember those who fought for our freedom. On November 11th, America will celebrate and honor Armistice Day, more commonly known as Veterans Day.

This special day marks the end of World War I, known back then as “The Great War”. In 1919, President Wilson proclaimed the first Armistice Day, and 1921 with congressional approval, established a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. That legislation also declared November 11th a legal Federal holiday to honor those who fought in the war.

On Sunday, November 13, the celebration of our Veterans continues at the memorial on 3131 East Joppa Road-Corner of 6th Avenue and Joppa Road. The event will start promptly at 2pm, and should last for about an hour. Guests from the local American Legion will be there to say a few words, followed by a moment to reflect.
