Oak Crest Residents Show How to Live the Life

Parkville, MD—Although the calendar says August, it’s far from being the “dog days of summer” at Oak Crest.

On August 7, the Erickson Living retirement community hosted the Live the Life Fair, a showcase of ninety (90) resident-run groups and activities. The event was coordinated by the Resident Life and Sales Departments.

More than 400 people attended, including nearly 100 priority list members and guests. They spoke with resident group leaders and participated in live demonstrations of dancing (sponsored by the Ball Room Dance Class), bocce and card games. The Zoo Mobile of the Maryland Zoo even made an appearance.

In total, 175 resident-led groups and activities exist at Oak Crest ranging from leisure pursuits and service organizations to arts & crafts and hobby interests.

Nadine Wellington is the Community Resources Manager at Oak Crest. “Live the Life demonstrated the vitality of our residents as their collective passion and talents were on display. It’s one thing to read about an activity here, but another thing to experience that personal touch with a room full of engaged people,” she said.

Recently formed groups such as Club 90, a dining hospitality group, and the Antique Club, serve notice that the creativity of Oak Crest residents is as vibrant as ever in the community’s 20th anniversary year.

“The key word is opportunity. Our residents can join existing groups, or if they want to try something different, form a new organization,” described Mrs. Wellington. “It’s a win-win for residents and staff.”
