Nottingham Resident, Carver Grad Wins National Gold

A Nottingham resident won Olympic gold last weekend in the most unlikely of competitions: painting.

Kevin Cobb, a recent Carver Center graduate, brought home his medal from Houston, TX, where he participated in the NAACP's Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics last weekend.

"It feels good," said Cobb, who won a bronze medal in painting at last year's competition. "It's not so much the medal as it is being recognized among my peers in painting."

In addition to the gold medal, he also brought home an iPad and $3,000 in cash, according to a statement from Baltimore County Public Schools.

He said that his interest in painting really began when he transferred to Carver from Perry Hall High in his sophmore year, and will continue when he attends the Maryland Institute College of Art in the fall.

Two other Carver Students, Dylan Guest of Woodlawn and junior Kylia Jackson of Owings Mills, also won national gold in sculpture and photography.

The three were among 700 participants in 26 categories in the arts, sciences, humanities and business.
