BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — Ground was officially broken Thursday for the new police station coming to the Essex area.
The Baltimore County Police Department said the new precinct is part of a $29.9 million investment project to renovate the station that has "faced increasing space constraints, resulting in 20 to 30 of its 161 employees working offsite."
The new precinct is expected to include a 40-seat community room and memorial garden, in addition to new holding cells, conference space and a secured entrance for detainees, among other features.
Photos from the event were shared by the department.
While construction is ongoing, officials said a 26,000-square-foot addition would be added onto the project to temporarily house law enforcement officials.
The project isn't expected to wrap until the summer of 2028.
