Donald Nusinov to Retire from Charles Nusinov & Sons

Longtime Charles Nusinov & Sons President Donald Nusinov is retiring from the landmark Baltimore jewelry store.

Charles Nusinov & Sons Jewelers has just announced the retirement of Donald Nusinov after 58 years in the family business. Donald is the third generation to run the store since it opened in 1923.

Son of the late Nathan Nusinov, and grandson of founder Charles Nusinov, Donald literally grew up in the jewelry business. From the age of 11, he began helping out by taking clocks apart and cleaning them, and working in the office for $6 a day. "It was a lot of money at the time," he says.

As he got older he started waiting on customers at the jewelry counter, and when he was 18 his father taught him jewelry repair. He worked at the bench for nine years.

Along the way Donald attended classes at University of Baltimore and was drafted and enlisted in the Coast Guard Reserves, his only detours away from the store’s iconic presence in the Baltimore area.

Filling a needed role, Donald left the shop and became involved in diamond and jewelry buying. In the 1970s, the "& Sons" part of the name included seven sons and grandsons, but by the late 1990s only Nathan and Donald were left running the store.

Nathan worked until he was 89, but passed away in 2009. "I was very close with my dad and enjoyed working side by side with him for so many years."

Now 69 himself, and with a four-year old grandson named Nathan, Donald is ready to slow down and spend more time with his family. He will turn the reins over to sons Sydney and Alan, who have also grown up in the business.

To celebrate his retirement, Charles Nusinov and Sons is hosting a huge retirement sale offering big storewide discounts and a chance for friends and loyal customers to say good-bye to Donald.

"I feel proud to have continued the family legacy into our 93rd year," said Donald, "and I am confident Sydney and Alan will keep it going for many years to come."
