Five Simple Oatmeal Recipes

Don't forget about this warm wonderful breakfast option!

Oatmeal is my breakfast of choice for cool weather months. It cooks up fast, keeps me full and can host a variety of yummy healthy ingredients.

You could buy they pre-flavored, sugar-laden packets—but where's the fun in that? Save the cash, buy Old Fashioned Oats in bulk and make your own flavors!

Here are a few of my favorites recipes:

Homemade Apple Pie Oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup (40g) Old Fashioned Oats
  • 6 ounces water
  • 1 packet of sweetener
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce

Place the oats, water, sweetener and cinnamon in a small pot over medium high heat. Cook and stir until water is absorbed, about 5 minutes.

Mix the cooked oatmeal with applesauce.

Sprinkle a bit more cinnamon on top to taste.

Creamy Berry Oatmeal
  • ½ cup (40g) of quick oats
  • 4 ounces boiling water
  • ¼ cup non-fat yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • ½ teaspoon raspberry or strawberry extract
  • 4-5 strawberries cut in small pieces
  • Handful of blueberries

Let the quick oats sit in the boiling water while you prepare everything else (about 3-4 minutes).

Mix the yogurt, honey and extract together. Add in the berries and cooked oatmeal.

Pumpkin Pie Oatmeal
  • 1 packet of plain instant or quick oats oatmeal (just about an ounce or 28g)
  • 2-4 ounces (1/4–1/2 cup) of boiling water, depending on how thick you like it (I used 3 ounces for the batch in the photo)
  • 1 teaspoon (15g) brown or raw sugar
  • 1/4 cup (60g) of plain canned pumpkin
  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Add boiling water to oatmeal and let it sit while you pull out all of the other ingredients (about 2 minutes). If you like it thick like I do, the water should just cover the oats.

Add the pumpkin, sugar, pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon and nutmeg. Stir together. If it's too thick, add a splash of the boiling water. This will bring the temperature back up as well.

Simple Thick Chocolate Oatmeal with Almonds
  • 5 ounces light chocolate milk
  • 1/2 cup old fashioned rolled oats (40g)
  • 1/2 ounce almonds (I used the chocolate kind (Cocoa Roast Almonds)—My favorite!)

Put the milk and oatmeal in a small pot and bring to a boil while stirring. Lower the heat to a simmer and cook until desired thickness. For me it was about 2-3 minutes.

Pour in bowl and top with almonds.

Tangerine Pecan Oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup Old Fashioned Oats (40g)
  • 6 ounces of water (I like my oatmeal thick, add more if you don't)
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon raspberry extract (vanilla or almond would work too)
  • 1 tangerine or mandarin orange peeled and separated into sections
  • 5 chopped pecans
  • Drizzle of honey (~1/4 tablespoon)

Put the oatmeal, water and salt in a small pot. Cook over medium heat until all the water is absorbed. Remove from heat and mix in the raspberry extract.

Put the cooked oatmeal a bowl and top with the tangerine, pecans and honey. It can't get any easier than that!
