PERRY HALL, MD — A new business opened in Perry Hall this week, filling a longstanding vacancy at a shopping center off Honeygo Boulevard.

Freedom Federal Credit Union is now offering banking services at the Honeygo Village Center in the space where First National Bank used to be. It has two drive-thru lanes, an ATM, free coin machine and lobby for in-person service.

This marks the first brick-and-mortar branch in Baltimore County for the company, which serves people in Baltimore and Harford counties.

“The Honeygo Branch provides us our first physical space within Baltimore County," President and CEO of Freedom Federal Credit Union Mike MacPherson said in a statement.

"While much of this last year has been focused on helping members through the pandemic, we decided to proceed with our expansion into Baltimore County, which will further allow us to offer lower cost loan options, higher deposit rates, better technology and access, and more community support across both Harford and Baltimore Counties," MacPherson said. "Our focus has been on expanding and enhancing every avenue and technology to allow our members more access to conduct business wherever needed, in-person, or online, all in the name of creating a better member experience."

The ribbon was cut Thursday at the Honeygo location, with local leaders in attendance.

"Freedom Federal is a terrific addition to the community!" Councilman David Marks said in a statement after Thursday's ribbon cutting at the new bank branch. "A longtime institution in Harford County, this credit union partners closely with local schools, and today awarded thousands of dollars for deserving projects. Welcome!"

Following Thursday's ribbon cutting, a business open house is slated for Friday, Aug. 20. Light food and refreshments will be served from 10 a.m. to noon as members of the business community are invited to meet with Freedom's senior leadership team and see the new branch. Register here.

Freedom was founded in 1953 in Baltimore as MATCOM Federal Credit Union. Later, the credit union moved to Harford County in support of the Edgewood Arsenal, which eventually became part of the Aberdeen Proving Ground, according to a statement from the company.

The credit union received its Harford County charter in 1999, and changed its name to Freedom of Maryland Federal Credit Union a year later. In 2020, Freedom's charter was expanded to serve the people of Baltimore County. For more information, see the Freedom Federal Credit Union website.
