In Season Report

Fall brings delicious local produce to Perry Hall

Hello Perry Hall! I'm so excited to be writing the first of what I hope will be many Flavor of Week articles. My name is Roni and I'm a fairly new resident of Perry Hall, having moved here over a year ago from Harford County. My goal for this column is to discuss food. Food, food, food, FOOD! I love food! Can you tell?

I've been writing about food from a diet and health perspective for some time now on my food blog, GreenLiteBites. I share recipes and tips on how to feed a picky family while trying to watch my waistline. Writing the Flavor of the Week will allow me to share information on a more local level. Each week, I hope to discuss current food trends, share recipes and discover new places to eat with you.

I thought we'd start with an in season report. As you can tell with the school bus-filled mornings and nippier night temperatures, fall is approaching. With it, comes a whole host of wonderful new crops. Right now, seasonal Maryland produce includes apples, broccoli, cabbage, eggplant, peaches, peppers, cantaloupes, raspberries, winter squash, corn, potatoes, tomatoes and watermelons. It's a wonderful harvest time!

Some of our neighborhood stores like Giant and Weis sell locally grown produce, but don't forget to visit the local farms like Moore's Orchards on East Joppa Road. Right now, they have fresh peaches, plums, corn, tomatoes and watermelon for sale. Remember, buying in season doesn't only give you the best tasting produce it generally saves you money as well. According to LocalHarvest.com:

"Only 18 cents of every dollar, when buying at a large supermarket, go to the grower. 82 cents go to various unnecessary middlemen. Cut them out of the picture and buy your food directly from your local farmer."

Support local Baltimore County farmers, get the best produce and save some cash. That's a win-win-win in my book!

I'll see you at the Farmers' Market at the Avenue. We still have a few weeks left. Stop by each friday between 10-1 PM until October 29th!
