Neighbors Rescued Woman, Dogs From Joppa House Fire: Officials

Fire broke out at a Joppa home Thursday night where a tenant had recently been evicted, officials said.

JOPPA, MD — A woman and three dogs were rescued from a burning house in Joppa Thursday night, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Among the fire companies responding to the blaze were Kingsville, White Marsh and Joppa-Magnolia.

Neighbors discovered the fire at 5:37 p.m. at the home in the 200 block of Kearney Drive. According to the fire marshal, the blaze began on the back sun porch.

A woman who had been evicted several days before was trespassing at the home "to retrieve some last belongings and according to her, discovered a fire in the sun porch and retreated to the rear bedroom," the fire marshal said in a statement Friday.

One neighbor threw a ceramic pot into the back window to get the woman, who sustained minor cuts, to safety, according to officials.

A neighbor also pulled three dogs from the burning home by crawling through a window, the fire marshal reported.

It took nearly 30 firefighters approximately 20 minutes to bring the blaze under control, authorities reported.

The Kingsville Volunteer Fire Company reported that its crew was at the scene for 90 minutes helping to put out fire on the first floor and attic.

Fire officials determined the blaze started on the back sun porch, but the cause remained under investigation.

As a result of the blaze, there was $30,000 in structural damage, according to the fire marshal.
