New Express Toll Lanes on I-95 Will Open in Three Weeks

Drivers can use the lanes for free during the first week they are open.

According to the Maryland Transportation Authority, traffic reporters will have less to talk about after Dec. 6, due to the opening of the I-95 Express Toll Lanes.

The $1 billion project created four total additional lanes along an 8-mile stretch of Interstate 95, from I-895 to MD 43.

From Dec. 6 to Dec. 12, drivers are welcome to use the toll lanes—there are two northbound lanes and two southbound lanes—free of charge. While drivers familiarize themselves with the new lanes, the Maryland Transportation Authority will have the opportunity to test the tolling equipment under actual traffic conditions.

Video cameras, rather than traditional toll booths, will collect toll fares using EZ Pass.

The rates vary based on the time of day and range from $1.75 during rush hour (6 to 9 a.m. weekdays on I-95 south and 3 to 7 p.m. for I-95 north) to $0.70 overnight (from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily). Those who do not have EZ Pass will be charged double the EZ Pass rate. See the toll fees here.

The express lanes are designed to decrease congestion and provide more reliable travel times, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority. The project also included improvements such as the replacement of two structurally deficient bridges on MD 43 and reconfiguring three interchanges (I-895, I-695 and MD 43), among other measures.
