Nick's Carryout & Deli Closes; Cause Unknown

A series of businesses have failed at 9113 Belair Rd.

Nick's Carryout & Deli closed its doors last week, joining a long line of eateries that have failed to stay in business at 9113 Belair Rd.

The restaurant, run by a husband and wife team, had opened in February, taking the place of the short-lived . Community members had initially hoped Nick's would survive and even thrive as the newest pizza and sandwich shop in town.

"Since Perry Hall lost Chubby’s on Belair Road a few years back, there’s yet to be a successful food spot in that location. Looks like that might change, thanks to the newly opened Nick’s Carryout & Deli," wrote Brad Klipner in a

Comments under the review were filled with encouragement. "It is nice to see a place that takes pride in the food they serve," wrote George Schreiner. "I hope this place makes it because I enjoy going there."

"I ate there a couple times," said Robert Butta, a barber at  shop, located two doors down from the now-closed Nick's. "It was pretty good."

The restaurant's closing probably has more to do with location than management, Butta said.

"I've been here 16 years. At least six businesses have opened there," he said. "There's no parking out front. People don't see parking and they keep going."

Property owner Peggy Marmaras disagreed.

She and her husband, George Marmaras, purchased the 2,624-square-foot building in 1999. At the time, she said, The Bean Counter, a coffee shop, was leasing the space.

"I would never want to say anything bad about them ... but it just seems to me that a lot of the people who lease don't have much business experience," Peggy said.

She said she was not sure why Nick's discontinued the lease. "But businesses all over are doing badly with the economy how it is," she added.

John Avgerinos, who signed the lease for Nick's, did not immediately respond for comment.
