Police were alerted after 2:45 a.m. that a van was ramming an airport shuttle bus. Officials said the van driver was suspected of waving a handgun at the bus on MD 295 south at West Nursery Road. When the shuttle stopped at the airport, the van continued forward, according to officials.

Troopers from the Glen Burnie barrack said they found the van on MD 295 south at I-195 east near the airport. The van went onto I-97, police said, traveling between 115 and 120 mph.

A trooper from the Annapolis barrack used stop sticks on I-97 south at Farm Road and punctured the front right tire of the van, but police said the vehicle continued going 60 mph.

The van exited onto eastbound US 50 before taking Rowe Boulevard in Annapolis to a dead-end road at the U.S. Naval Academy, where troopers from Annapolis and Glen Burnie conducted a traffic stop and took Sommerfeldt into custody without incident.

Nobody was injured, according to police.

Sommerfeldt was examined at Anne Arundel Medical Center, Maryland State Police reported Friday afternoon. Criminal charges are pending once he is released, officials said.

The case remains under investigation.
