Parkville Teen Reportedly Dies After Ocean City Rip Current Incident

A 17-year-old from Parkville died after getting caught in a rip current in Ocean City Friday afternoon, WUSA 9 reported.

After 2 p.m. on Friday, police received a call that the teen was underwater in a rip current at the beach near 92nd Street, prompting a search by Ocean City police and emergency medical personnel, the U.S. Coast Guard and water rescuers, according to ABC 2 News.

A plane from a local air show also offered its services, helping to look for the victim from above, WJLA reported.

The teen was pulled from the water at 2:50 p.m. and received treatment from Ocean City first responders, according to WBOC.

Approximately 30 rescuers participated in the effort to locate the teen, who was taken to Atlantic General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to NBC Washington.

Authorities will not release the name of the victim, WUSA 9 said.

"I'm sorry it wasn't a better outcome," Maryland State Police Lt. Walter Kerr told Delmarva Now. Kerr was reportedly in the helicopter helping with the search when beach patrol units from Ocean City found the teen in the water.

This was the second drowning of a Maryland teen in Ocean City due to a rip current this month. An 18-year-old from Montgomery County was killed on June 2, according to Rockville Patch, which reported that incident took place at the beach off 137th Street.
