Perry Hall Superfresh Could Be Sold by Mid-June

Superfresh's parent company, A&P, announced Wednesday that it was seeking court approval to market and sell 25 Superfresh stores in Maryland, Delaware and Washington, D.C.

Of the 24 Superfresh stores in Maryland, 22 are likely to be put up for sale.

Formally known as the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., the public corporation filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in December. A&P operates 395 stores in eight eastern states and the District.

"While the decision to put these non-core stores up for sale will unfortunately impact some of our customers, partners, communities and Associates, this is a necessary step in our efforts to restore the Company to long-term financial health," A&P President and CEO Sam Martin said in a news release.

The Perry Hall location would be marketed as a grocery store, said Eric Andrus, an A&P spokesman. It's unclear how long the location could be vacant following the store's sale and closure, Andrus said. The company has not disclosed how many people will lose their jobs.

The store opened about 10 years ago, said Greg Cullison, assistant store manager. He said he was not able to comment on the store's impending sale.

The grocery store abuts the , which has many empty storefronts. County Councilman David Marks has repeatedly discussed , which was built in 1964.

A is planned for April 27 at 6 p.m., in the library of at 9021 Belair Rd., to discuss a possible in the area. Marks and staff from the will answer questions from business owners and community members.
