Each year, more than 40 percent of Christmas tree buyers say they purchased theirs at a tree farm or garden center, according to the National Christmas Tree Association.

"As we celebrate the holiday season, I encourage all Marylanders to buy a real, fresh Christmas tree from a locally owned farm," said Maryland Agriculture Secretary Joe Bartenfelder.

“Christmas trees are an agricultural crop. They are grown to be cut, enjoyed and then new ones are planted again,” Bartenfelder said. "Farms that grow Christmas trees stabilize soil, protect water supplies and provide wildlife habitat."

Agriculture is Maryland's biggest commercial industry, and Maryland farmers who grow Christmas trees help the environment because by planting and replanting them, officials say they are expanding the amount of available oxygen.
