PHOTOS: Big American Food at Bill Bateman's

If the food at Bill Bateman's came with instructions, it would say, "Large-portioned American fare: Eat with both hands while watching sports."

The menu reminded me of happy hour pubs in downtown D.C., where young professionals flock for beers and a reliable spread of appetizers—although the atmosphere, early on a Friday evening, felt more like a local steakhouse.

What was the crowd favorite? Sweet potato fries—hot and crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside and served with a drizzly vanilla dip.
