PHOTOS: Chainsaw Transformation Outside Perry Hall Square

One man, a large tree stump and a couple of chainsaws—only in the hands of Jim Calder does that combination render a sea turtle.

Calder, a Perry Hall native, was invited Saturday morning and afternoon to participate in the STIHL Demo Day outside Ace Hardware at Perry Hall Square Shopping Center. The world-renowned chainsaw carver tackled two stumps before an audience of customers, passers-by and Troop 984 Boy Scouts out of Perry Hall Presbyterian Church.

He said he plans to donate a stump carving to Perry Hall Middle School. 

"This is where it all started. I grew up in this neck of the woods," Calder said. "Carving has been good to me. I want to give back."

Calder's carving was part of the event's entertainment, along with prizes, hot dogs and discounts at the store.

Gregory Dopkowski, Ace Hardware manager, said the event was in part to let the community know that his store was still in business.

"We've been here six years," he said with a laugh, "and people still don't know we're here."
