Quick-Thinking Child Honored After Saving His Grandmother

PERRY HALL, MD — A young Honeygo Elementary School student was recently honored for acting quickly after his grandmother collapsed.

Five-year-old Liam was at home with his grandmother when she suffered a stroke and became unresponsive. Realizing something was wrong, Liam called his mom, who subsequently alerted first responders to the Perry Hall home.

"I got a phone call, and I heard my 5-year-old, and he said, 'Mommy, something's wrong with Mimi. Mimi's not feeling well.' And so, I'm like, 'Liam, what's going on?' And he's like, 'Mommy, Mimi is on the floor,'" Ashley Paschall, Liam's mom, told WJZ of the April incident.

Paschall told the outlet that Liam knows his grandmother wears a glucose monitor and that when the device beeps, it means her levels are either high or low.

As Paschall stayed on the phone with Liam, he tried giving his grandmother a banana after he was unable to open a soda can. Not long after that, the medics arrived at the home after Liam opened the door for them.

Acknowledging Liam for his bravery, the Baltimore County Police Department awarded him with a certificate, a rubber police officer duck, and a plastic badge.

The recognition was held in front of Liam's classmates, school principal and his mother.
