Baltimore Police Sergeant Who Was Shot Now On Life Support: BPD

The off-duty police sergeant shot in his neighborhood has worked for the Baltimore Police Department for 22 years, officials said.

BALTIMORE, MD — A Baltimore police sergeant is on life support Thursday night after he was shot in his neighborhood in northeast Baltimore Thursday afternoon, according to authorities. The search for the suspect(s) is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact police.

Sgt. Isaac Carrington, 43, who has been with the Baltimore Police Department for 22 years, was talking with a neighbor on his front lawn when a vehicle pulled up, then at least one man wearing a face mask got out and held them up at gunpoint, officials said.

The neighbor threw his valuables on the ground and ran, and Carrington ran in the opposite direction, according to police. Investigators said the gunman chased the off-duty officer and shot him multiple times.

Authorities were called to the 5600 block of Summerfield Avenue when the shooting was reported at 3:24 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 8, police said.

After the gunman got into the vehicle, the getaway driver took off north on Summerfield Road, then west on Todd Avenue. The vehicle is believed to have been an Acura, officials reported.

Authorities said the officer was on the way to the hospital at 3:45 p.m. Carrington, who underwent surgery after suffering multiple gunshot wounds, is currently on life support at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, police reported in an update Thursday night.

This is the second police sergeant shot in the city in less than a month.

A Baltimore police sergeant was shot under his bulletproof vest July 15 at a methadone clinic in the 2100 block of Maryland Avenue where a man walked in and opened fire. Two people died in that shooting, including the gunman and a lab worker. According to The Baltimore Sun, the sergeant was released from the hospital July 21.

Gov. Larry Hogan changed his Facebook cover photo Thursday night in a show of support for the Baltimore Police Department.


"We ask that you keep this officer in your prayers as he fights for his life," Hogan posted. "But thoughts and prayers alone are not enough. We have been pushing tough sentences to get these violent shooters off the streets. Now is the time for city and legislative leaders to finally join us and support our efforts."



INITIAL REPORT: A police sergeant was injured in a shooting Thursday afternoon in northeast Baltimore, officials said. Authorities reported the officer was on the way to the hospital at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 8.

The shooting occurred in the 5500 block of Summerfield Avenue, according to the Baltimore Police Department.

The officer was in plain clothes and appeared to have been the victim of a robbery after which the suspects shot him four or five times before leaving in a black car, a bystander told WBAL.

The wounded officer was being taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, officials said. Police did not immediately release the condition of the officer.
