Speed Camera Law: 5 New Rules You Need To Know in Maryland

New rules are on the books for speed cameras in Maryland as of Sunday, June 1.

Here's a few things you need to know about new driver-friendly speed camera reforms, according to the Dr. Gridlock blog at The Washington Post: 

1. Citations using camera footage must be sworn to by law enforcement officers.
2. Contractors running the cameras won't be paid based on the number of tickets issued. WTOP referred to this charge as a "bounty program," criticized for encouraging quantity over accuracy.
3. New requirements in schools zones include a sign warning of a speed camera in proximity to the school zone sign.
4. Jurisdictions using speed cameras must designate a 'sort of ombudsman,' according to the Post. This person will be able to void citations when an error is determined. 
5. And, finally, these machines may be more accurate. The law requires that the machines be calibrated by an independent lab, according to NBC Washington. And the speed camera contractors will face fines for too many erroneous tickets.
