Nearly 40 People Injured In Pikesville After Bus Crashes Into Building

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — Nearly 40 people were injured late Wednesday after an MTA bus struck several cars in Pikesville before crashing into a building.

The latest update issued by the Baltimore County Police Department on Thursday confirmed that a total of 12 vehicles were involved in the collision.

A release by the department also indicated that it was the MTA bus driver who was airlifted to a local hospital for life-threatening injuries.

The Baltimore County Fire Department said the mass casualty incident took place on the 1500 block of Reisterstown Road and involved multiple vehicles, including one that had rolled over.

First calls about the collision were received just before 6 p.m.

Police said a total of 36 people suffered injuries and were taken to area hospitals.

Baltimore County Fire Chief Joseph Dixon likened the Wednesday crash site to a "war scene" due to the significant damage.

Photos shared by the department show multiple cars that were severely damaged, as well as bricks, car parts and a mix of debris strewn across the roadway.

Dixon told reporters that over 100 first responders from across the state had responded, some coming from Anne Arundel and Howard counties. At least 15 ambulances were at the scene.

Investigators have not yet determined what caused the series of collisions. Dixon did not comment on whether speed played a factor.

Baltimore County Police said an investigation remains ongoing in the case.

Road closures are in effect in both directions between Old Court Road and McHenry Avenue as a result of the crash. Residents are strongly urged to avoid the area.
