Week in Review: Basketball Records and Chinese New Year

A look back at the top news in Potomac from Jan. 29 through Feb. 5.

It’s been another busy week in Potomac, full of news about the community, its sports teams and its traditions.

The Chinese New Year began on Feb. 3 and in honor of the “Year of the Rabbit,” students in the Chinese Immersion Program at Potomac Elementary School . The students in Potomac Elementary's Chinese Immersion Program — one of the few programs like it in the county — performed an original opera written by the students, danced the traditional Lion Dance, executed Chinese acrobatics and demonstrated calligraphy and Chinese paper folding.

After mounting frustration with Pepco and other utility companies following extended power outages in the area, local politicians are . State legislation introduced Thursday, which was sponsored by Del. Brian Feldman (D-Dist. 15) of Potomac, will work to create reliability standards for Maryland utilities. The legislation will allow the Maryland Public Service Commission to fine utility companies for poor performance and direct payments back to affected ratepayers.

Redskins Owner and Potomac resident, Dan Snyder is firing back after the Washington City Paper and caused personal defamation. Snyder filed a $2 million lawsuit on Wednesday against the Washington City Paper’s parent company for a Nov. 19 story by Dave McKenna, which was an “encyclopedia of the owner's many failings.”

This week, Potomac Patch ran a story about how local service group, MoverMoms, is . Executive Director Kahlenberg reached out to local families, organizations and schools, including Churchill High School and Hoover Middle School, to help collect soap for the "Hope and Soap for Haiti" campaign. The organization is hoping to collect 2,011 bars of soap by Feb. 14.

It’s been another big week for the Churchill High School boys' basketball team, which now stands in first place in the Montgomery County 4A West Division for the first time in 32 years. On Friday, the team won their 13th straight game when they defeated Richard Montgomery, 58-34.
