Why Memorizing Words to Prepare for the SAT Doesn't Significantly Increase Scores

I have tutored literally thousands of teens for the SAT since I began doing test prep in 1978! Wow! That's a lot of years, too.

Moving on... so many of my students will come to me from other courses where the primary thrust of the 'critical reading' prep training was to memorize words.

They eventually find me, as after taking an exam, they realize they need to also work on improving their reading comprehension as well - good point since the reading encompasses 72% of the exam! Needing to know challenging vocabulary - only about 10%-15% of the exam!
