$225K Damage Caused By Aspen Hill House Fire

Two people were displaced and 60 firefighters were called to the scene of a house fire Tuesday night.

(Updated 1:07 p.m. Wednesday): ASPEN HILL, MD — Two adults were displaced after a fire ripped through a home in Aspen Hill Tuesday night, a Montgomery County fire official said.

Dozens of firefighters were called to the scene at 4201 Southend Rd. around midnight Tuesday. Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Pete Piringer said the two residents were alerted to the fire by smoke alarms and safely evacuated their home.

When firefighters arrived, there was still heavy fire showing. Piringer said it took about 60 firefighters to extinguish the blaze. One firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion, and was treated and later released.

According to WJLA, the firefighters had a difficult time putting out the fire because of "hoarding conditions" at the house. Officials said debris was found stacked from floor to ceiling inside the home and multiple windows were blocked by boxes. This made it challenging to get hoses into the home.

The cause of the fire was accidental, according to Piringer. The fire caused about $225,000 worth of damage.
