Storms Thrashed 2 MoCo Workers On Unsecured Scaffolding: MCFRS

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — Two construction workers caught in Monday's storm were forced to break into a Gaithersburg apartment after their scaffolding became unsecured.

The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service said the incident was reported at the Washingtonian Towers at 9701 Fields Road. The first calls reporting the mishap came in shortly after 4 p.m.

David Pazos, of the MCFRS, said the scaffolding became unsecured as the crew was working at the building's ninth floor.

Video shared online by Pazos shows both workers on the scaffolding as they're slammed into the side of the building by strong wind gusts.

Both individuals managed to get to safety by breaking into an apartment window. Pazos said neither suffered any injuries during the incident.

"They declined transport and were not injured but shaken up after flying around 9 stories on a unsecured scaffolding," Pazos said.

The National Weather Service earlier warned that storms moving into the region had the potential to produce wind gusts between 60 and 70 mph.

Monday storm damage also included an electrical outlet fire in Bethesda, at the 5100 block of W. Cedar Lane, that resulted in two adults displaced. See photos from the scene.

The fire was reported after a tree hit the home, according to Pazos, who said no injuries were reported at the scene.

In Rockville, a tree also collapsed on the front porch of a home on Maxim Lane. Pazos said a man had self-rescued after suffering non-life-threatening injuries.

Both incidents were reported shortly before 4:30 p.m.
