3 Rescued From Potomac River After Boat Hits Tree

Three people were found clinging to a tree in the Potomac River over the weekend after their boat crashed, authorities said.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — Three people were rescued from the Potomac River after their boat crashed into a tree over the weekend, officials said.

Pete Piringer, a spokesperson with the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, said first responders were alerted Saturday around 12:30 a.m. to a report that a Jon Boat had hit a tree.

The crash happened near the privately-owned Tenfoot Island, in the area of Riley's Lock. At the scene, officials found three individuals hanging onto a tree.

At least one person was said to have suffered injuries. Officials did not disclose the extent of the injuries.

All three were taken to the nearby Algonkian Boat Ramp on the Virginia side of the Potomac River for further evaluation. They were later taken to a local hospital.

The incident prompted a multi-agency response involving crews from Montgomery, Fairfax and Loudoun counties.
