ROCKVILLE, MD — The Montgomery County school district shelled out millions in payouts to hundreds of employees who were incentivized to retire, according to a report.
Bethesda Today reported that Montgomery County Public Schools paid about $6 million to 577 employees, but the figure could run as high as $16 million because it also included unused annual or sick leave.

The payout figures follow the school district, considered the largest in Maryland, after it made hundreds of job cuts when it adopted its $7.9 billion operating budget earlier this year.
The budget passed 9-2 despite a $36 million shortfall that MCPS Superintendent Thomas Taylor warned would have far-reaching impacts on the school system.
