If you've just helped a parent sign a power of attorney, it can feel like the hard part is over. It isn't &mdash; it's just beginning. A POA opens the door to helping with someone's finances, but it doesn't hand you a master key. Every bank, agency, and utility company you contact next will want its own proof, on its own terms, that the door is really open.
<h2>What a POA actually is &mdash; and isn't</h2>
A power of attorney is a legal document naming someone &mdash; an "agent" or "attorney-in-fact" &mdash; to act on another person's behalf. That's it. It's easy to confuse a POA with other roles that sound similar but work very differently:
<ul><li>It isn't the same as being an executor. An executor only has authority after someone passes away, and only over what's named in a will. A POA works only while the person is alive, and it ends the moment they die.</li><li>It isn't a healthcare proxy. A medical POA covers healthcare decisions; a financial POA covers money and property. Many families need both, sometimes with the same agent and sometimes not.</li><li>It isn't the same as being a joint account holder. A joint owner has an independent right to the account. An agent under a POA is acting for someone else, and banks scrutinize that authority far more closely.</li></ul>
<h2>General/durable vs. springing: a distinction that matters more than it sounds</h2>
Most attorneys recommend a durable power of attorney &mdash; one that takes effect the moment it's signed and stays in effect even if the person later becomes incapacitated. A springing power of attorney, by contrast, only "springs" into effect once a specific condition is met, usually a doctor's written certification of incapacity.
On paper, a springing POA sounds like a reasonable safeguard: nothing happens until it's truly needed. In practice, it creates the exact delay a family can't afford &mdash; getting that doctor's letter takes time, and in the meantime, bills go unpaid and the agent gets turned away at the bank. If you're already <a href="https://mindfulforyou.com/recognizing-the-signs-of-dementia-protecting-finances-before-problems-arise/" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">noticing changes in a parent's memory or judgment</a>, a durable POA that's already in effect avoids that bottleneck entirely.
<h2>Having the document is step one. Every institution has its own process.</h2>
This is the part that catches families off guard: a valid POA doesn't mean instant access anywhere. Each organization has its own verification process, and no two look exactly alike.
<ul><li>Banks and credit unions generally want the original account holder to bring the POA in, if at all possible, and the agent to appear in person with ID to be added to the account. Some institutions now offer "Trusted Contact" style features that let someone <a href="https://mindfulforyou.com/how-you-can-protect-your-parents-from-scammers/" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">flag suspicious activity</a> on an account without giving them any transaction authority &mdash; worth asking about if you're worried about scams.</li><li>Social Security and Medicare do not recognize a POA at all. Because they're federal programs, they require their own separate process, typically appointing a Representative Payee, no matter what a state-law POA says.</li><li>The IRS has its own power of attorney form, separate from any state document.</li><li>Pension and retirement plan administrators, utility companies, and the county recorder's office for real estate each maintain their own rules for who they'll talk to and what paperwork they require before they will.</li></ul>
Multiply that across every account and agency a family deals with, and "I have a POA" can turn into weeks of phone trees, faxed forms, and repeat branch visits &mdash; exactly when there's the least time and patience to spare.

ROCKVILLE, MD&nbsp;&mdash; Kenneth Chivir Shenge, a Nigerian-born author of Tiv heritage, announced the release of his debut novel,&nbsp;The Name That Echoes: A Novel of Becoming, now available in hardcover, paperback, and Kindle editions on Amazon and in eBook format on Barnes &amp; Noble. The audiobook edition is forthcoming.
The novel follows Alexander Terver Zever, a boy who is seven years old when the world he was born into vanishes. Raised in Comfortville, a community engineered for order, comfort, and quiet sufficiency, Alexander grows up within carefully maintained boundaries and unquestioned rules. Something in him resists. A name he cannot place. Fragments of memory that do not belong. A persistent sense that the life assigned to him is smaller than the one he was meant to live. What follows is not a story of sudden rebellion or dramatic escape. It is something slower and more costly: the gradual recovery of a self that was displaced before it was fully formed.
At the moral center of the novel stands a Tiv proverb: a person can be led so gradually away from his own path that, in time, he begins to call the wilderness home.
"I am Tiv, from Benue State, Nigeria," said Shenge. "That heritage is the foundation on which this story stands. But I wrote this book for anyone who has ever been led, gradually and almost imperceptibly, away from who they are, and who has had to find their way back. That journey belongs to no single person or people."
The Name That Echoes&nbsp;is literary fiction with a dystopian backbone, written with philosophical depth and emotional restraint. It draws on the oral traditions, moral frameworks, and cultural memory of the Tiv people of central Nigeria, while speaking to universal questions of identity, belonging, memory, and the slow cost of becoming.
The novel is published through Spines and is available through major online retailers. It carries BISAC classifications in Literary Fiction, African American and Black Fiction, and Coming of Age Fiction.
About the Author
Kenneth Chivir Shenge is a Nigerian-born author of Tiv heritage, writing from Rockville, Maryland. He holds a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology and a Master of Public Health, as well as a postgraduate diploma in Theology, and has served in Christian ministry for more than three decades. His scholarly discipline and his pastoral vocation share a common conviction: that how we understand ourselves determines how we live.&nbsp;The Name That Echoes&nbsp;is his debut novel. He is at work on his second. He is married to Mercy, and they have four children.

Hank Dietle's Tavern

Hank Dietle’s has been a labor of love for fans of the county’s oldest licensed bar for many years, serving up cold beer and warm memories since the 1916 store reopened as Hank Dietle’s Tavern in 1950. As development pressures were wiping out history along the pike, longtime fan Tony Huniak took over in 1990 to keep our beloved bar going. When the Quarry House burned in 2015, Tony welcomed Rockabilly Saturday Night to a new venue on the pike, carving out space for dancing in a homey social setting that proved a perfect fit for fans of live roots &amp; retro music. After Hank Dietle’s suffered a devastating fire in February 2018, fans rallied again to save the irreplaceable roadhouse. Chantal “Kiti” Gartner set up a Go Fund Me website to help the out of work employees and teamed with Mark Segraves and others to organize a benefit concert to launch a reconstruction effort. Thanks to their tireless efforts and many fans who contributed, the roof was repaired, the porch rebuilt, critical electrical work done, and interior walls rebuilt. Building on their efforts, three devotees of the historic tavern, Tommy Bowes, Sarah Bonner, and Alan Kresse, along with Gina Cocco, Lisa White, and Tom Helf, teamed up to complete work on the interior, recreate our beloved “Hank Dietle’s Cold Beer” sign, and get the institution rolling again. All are long-time supporters of Maryland’s live music and dance scene—musicians, promoters and entrepreneurs dedicated to ensuring that Hank Dietle’s rides again.
