Four of Most Diverse Cities in America Are in Montgomery County

The website WalletHub says diversity has made the country adaptable and helped it thrive. Which cities excel at that?

GAITHERSBURG, MD — Four Montgomery County communities have been named to the “2016’s Most Diverse Cities in America list, with Gaithersburg leading the way.

The city beat out New York and Los Angeles for the title.

“We’re thrilled that Gaithersburg has achieved this ranking again,” said Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman. “We’re not without our challenges as we strive to be as inclusive as possible across our cultural and economic differences, but our commitment to recognizing and embracing the contributions of all of our residents strengthens the fabric of this community, making Gaithersburg an awesome place to live.”

Also on the diverse cities list is Silver Spring at No. 4, Germantown at No. 5 and Rockville at No. 14.

“Diversification is nothing to be feared. In fact, economic growth follows it,” sayd the website. “America would not enjoy such unrivaled economic success if not for the waves of immigration that both changed the face of the nation and accelerated financial and social mobility.”

WalletHub, an online financial resource and services website for individuals and businesses, recently released a study of the most diverse cities in the nation. Criteria included social class, ethno-racial, household and economic diversity, and more.

The No. 2 ranking went to Jersey City, NJ, followed by Oakland, CA. New York came in at No. 6 on the list.

Study authors said the least diverse city in the country is Detroit.
