1 Person Dead, MoCo Homes Evacuated After Hazardous Chemical Release
Montgomery County police said a hazardous chemical release Tuesday afternoon killed one person in Derwood.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — One person is dead in Derwood after they released a gaseous chemical inside their home near the Shady Grove Metro station.
The individual has only been identified as an adult man.

Pete Piringer, spokesman for the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services, said on X that the gas was cleared by first responders, and there is no danger to the community.
Moments earlier, homes in the Montgomery County neighborhood were evacuated, according to authorities.

Montgomery County police said officers were dispatched to the 8100 block of Front Street in Derwood shortly before 2:40 p.m. after the person released the hazardous material inside their home.
Residents are being asked to avoid the area.
Piringer initially said the problem was a possible propane gas leak.
No additional details were immediately available.
