ROCKVILLE, MD — Montgomery County Public Schools has made another round of adjustments to the calendar year for students.

This time, however, days are being axed.

Students will now celebrate the end of the school year on June 18. Classes were previously scheduled to end June 26 in order to make up for snow days after several rounds of storms impacted the region.

The school district said the change took effect Tuesday after the Maryland State Board of Education approved a resolution to waive three days of instruction.

"Our goal is to make learning time meaningful and we know that extending late into June would lose much of that meaning," reads a release by the district.

"We are pleased and appreciative that we can continue to provide all required learning time without extending the school year into late June, better supporting family schedules and avoiding expected high late spring absenteeism."

The latest schedule update comes a week after the school system announced it would be changing April 15 to an early release day after initially listing it as a non-instructional day.

The Maryland State Department of Education requires public schools to hold instruction for 180 days, with a minimum of 1,080 hours for elementary and middle schools and 1,170 hours for high schools in 10 months.

School officials say the updated calendar meets those requirements for students.

Looking to strengthen the system's inclement weather policy, the district said it is preparing a virtual learning plan that will be submitted to the MSDE for approval. Additional mitigation efforts include a review of the 2026-2027 school year.
