Montgomery County Coronavirus Cases Surpass 2,000

ROCKVILLE, MD — The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Montgomery County surpassed 2,000 on Thursday, nearly doubling the total from last week.

The Maryland Department of Health announced there are now 2,133 cases in Montgomery County — an increase of 200 from a day earlier. That's nearly double the 1,214 cases reported on April 9.

Statewide, there are 10,784 known cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. A day earlier, the total was 10,032; and a week ago, the total stood at 6,185.

On Wednesday, the state began counting probable coronavirus deaths — which are deaths of people who likely had the new coronavirus, but died without being tested. Previously, deaths were only counted if they tested positive for the disease.

There have been 56 confirmed deaths and 14 probable deaths in Montgomery County, as of Thursday morning. Maryland has reported 392 confirmed deaths and 67 probable deaths.

Since the state reported its first coronavirus case in early March, 48,059 have tested negative for the disease, 2,451 have been hospitalized, and 736 have been released from isolation.

No one under the age of 20 has died from COVID-19 in Maryland, according to health officials. Most people were 70 years old and up.

On Sunday, the state began posting COVID-19 cases by ZIP code on its coronavirus page.

Silver Spring is one of the hardest hit areas in Montgomery County, according to the latest figures.

• 20906 — 172 cases
• 20902 — 161 cases
