Montrose Tops John Carroll in ESPN RISE Tournament
Mustangs play Friday afternoon at Georgetown Prep.
Ronald Scott's 16 first quarter points were not enough in John Carroll's 64–59 loss to , the nation's No. 3-ranked team, in an ESPN RISE High School Invitational quarterfinal matchup on Thursday afternoon at in North Bethesda.
Senior Tyrone Johnson led the top-seeded Mustangs, who did not trail in the second half, with 17 points.
The eighth-seeded Patriots were led by Scott's game-high 25 points, 15 of which came on 3-pointers. Scott had 16 in the first quarter.

was within two points multiple times late in the game, but could not convert.
Trailing 59–57 with 1:46 remaining in the fourth, senior Malcolm McMillan missed a 3-pointer from the right wing. Less than 30 seconds later, McMillan and Scott failed to convert a two-on-one fast break when Mustangs junior Justin Anderson blocked Scott's layup attempt.

Montrose Christian led 61–59 with less than a minute remaining when Patriots sophomore Mike Owona came up with a steal. On the ensuing possession, junior Jarred Jones missed an open 3-pointer from the left corner that would have put John Carroll on top, but Michael Carrera came up with the rebound and the Mustangs sealed the victory from the free throw line.
Carrera, a junior, finished with 14 points for Montrose, the No. 1 seed in the ESPN-televised tournament.
The hectic first quarter had 17 lead changes and three ties as the Patriots took a 26–24 lead. The game was tied at 35 at the half.
Johnson has signed with Villanova while Anderson has verbally committed to play at Maryland. McMillan has signed with Central Connecticut State.
McMillan finished with 13 points before fouling out. Jones had nine.
John Carroll is the only team in the single-elimination tournament not ranked in ESPN's top 50.
Montrose Christian plays (Brooklyn, NY) at 3:30 p.m. on Friday in a semifinal game that will be broadcast on ESPN2.
