Olney Mom Saves $100K Lottery Prize for Kids’ College Costs

An Olney mother of three teenagers plans to save her $100,000 Maryland Lottery prize to pay for their college educations.

OLNEY, MD — An Olney mother of three is banking her $100,000 top prize on a Maryland Lottery Maximum Jackpot scratch-off to pay for her kids’ college educations.

The Montgomery County winner, who is a cashier by trade, said she started scratching off the winning instant ticket just moments after purchasing it from a 7-Eleven store near her home.

“I usually just buy the $5 scratch-offs but when I saw that this was the last single Maximum Jackpot scratch-off ticket left on the roll, I just paid the $10 and bought it,” the 47-year-old told Maryland Lottery officials. “When I saw how much money the ticket was saying I had won, I just started shaking right there in the store. It was shocking.”

The scratch-off player, who has three teenagers, said she will save most of the prize for their college educations. “I may also use a very small portion of my winnings to visit family in Georgia,” she said.

For selling a top-prize scratch-off in the game, the 7-Eleven will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery. The store is located at 18120 Georgia Ave. in Olney.
