Richest Place In Maryland Has $300K Average Income: Ranking

MARYLAND — Two places in Maryland claim top 50 spots on Bloomberg's 2020 Richest Places in the U.S. list. Bloomberg has been compiling the ranking, based on average household income, since 2017. Atherton, California led the list for the fourth year with an average household income of $525,324.

Montgomery County was one of the five wealthiest countries in the United States, and the richest communities in Maryland are located there, the list said.

Travilah, a census-designated place in Montgomery County, moved down one spot from a year ago to No. 25 on the list with an average household income of $300,607.

Darnestown jumped 21 spots on the list compared to last year, ranking 50th. The average Darnestown household income is $262,988, Bloomberg reports.

Four other Maryland places ranked in the top 100 richest communities, WTOP reported.

• No. 54 Chevy Chase, annual household income of $251,144
• No. 56 Potomac, annual household income of $248,797
• No. 82 Bethesda, annual household income of $229,734
• No. 96 South Kensington, annual household income of $221,621

Bloomberg evaluated nearly 6,300 U.S. locations with at least 2,000 households, ranking them by average household income. Towns on the list came from 16 states, a balance of wealth that Bloomberg wrote "remains largely unchanged over time."

Several states had more places in the top 100 than Maryland. California led the country with 23 towns, followed by New Jersey with 16, New York with 12, Illinois with 11, Texas with eight, Maryland with six and Connecticut with four.
