Rockets Ready for a Meaningful Final Game

Richard Montgomery won't make the playoffs, but is still playing for a winning season.

The Richard Montgomery football team wraps up their season tonight against Northwest with a chance to do something that many people wouldn't have expected at the beginning of the year: finish the season with a winning record.

A win over cross-town rival Rockville last week put the Rockets at 5-4 on the season. While they will not be able to make the playoffs, a final win would be important for the rebuilding program.

“While it's disappointing we won't reach our goal of making the playoffs, we're still playing a meaningful game [in] Week 10,” RM head coach Neal Owens said. “The kids deserve to win this game, they've done everything we've asked them to do this season.”

Standing in their way is a Northwest team that is 4-5 and still has a shot at reaching the playoffs with a win after a disappointing 2010 season.

“This is a very good team, and Coach Neubeiser has turned them around quickly,” Owens said. “They have a really good passing game and we have to play as well as we have all year to get a win.”

However, Owens also thinks his team is ready for the final game of the season.

“We've had a couple of fiery practices this week and they all want this win," he said.

RM and Northwest kick off at 6:30 tonight in Germantown.
