Rockville artist Kristina Garon: Dense Storms of Paint in NYC

Kristina Garon’s lively acrylic paintings are dense collections of real-world allusions, open-ended thoughts, and expressive figural representations. Garon is a maximal painter whose primary subject is energy. Her work roils with clouds and currents of color; her paints erupt into storms across her canvas. Within these expansive fields of bright red and blue, Garon buries symbols and signs that peek out at the viewer. Far from a central or straightforward composition, a Garon painting instead makes you work to find the ostensible subject. Faces are enfolded in incredible scrabbles of brushwork and layers of clashing texture.

In the pieces, it is this texture that defines the tone. According to Garon’s hand, her paintings become happy, anguished, anticipatory, thrilling, or devastating in turn. Not only strokes but washes, dribbles, and smeared fields are the true subject and star of these works.

Garon was born in Lithuania, where she studied traditional art before moving to her current home of Washington, DC. She has exhibited in Monaco, London, Poland, Germany, Lithuania, and the United States.
