Rockville Storm Update: Snow Emergency Restricts Parking

All vehicles must be off Rockville streets by 9 p.m. Wednesday; Thursday's garbage and recycling pickup has been delayed.

All vehicles must be off Rockville streets by 9 p.m. Thursday, say city officials, to prepare for the storm expected to bring up to 10 inches of snow to the region.

Residents are urged to stay off the roads once the storm begins, the city said in a release announcing the snow emergency.

To help with snow-plowing efforts, all vehicles should be parked in garages and driveways. If that is not possible, cars should be parked on the even-numbered side of the street.

In courts or cul-de-sacs, parking is allowed only on the left side of the streets as one enters the cul-de-sac or court. Do not park in the bulb of the court or cul-de-sac.

Three public parking lots will be open for residents to use:

  • Rockville Civic Center, 603 Edmonston Drive
  • Rockville Swim and Fitness Center, 355 Martins Lane
  • Elwood Smith Community Center, 601 Harrington Road

On-street parking in Rockville Town Center will be restricted starting at 11 p.m. Wednesday until further notice (adhere to posted signs). Cars illegally parked may be towed.

Recycling/Refuse Collection Changes

Rockville’s recycling and refuse collection service will be canceled on Thursday, March 5, and will be collected on Friday, March 6. Residents are asked to keep streets clear of refuse carts so that crews can safely and quickly clear snow from city streets.

Emergency Preparedness

Rockville requires that snow be removed from sidewalks, steps, driveways and parking spaces within 48 hours after a snowfall of 3 to 10 inches, and within 72 hours after a snowfall of more than 10 inches.

Residents are asked to shovel around fire hydrants so fire crews will have access to the hydrants in an emergency. Ice and snow should also be cleared from around storm drains, and the city asks residents to avoid shoveling snow into the street when possible.

Residents also are encouraged to check on older neighbors who may not be able to clear snow and may need some help.
