Severe Weather Prompts Tornado Watch For Montgomery County

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — A tornado watch is in effect Tuesday for Montgomery County as severe thunderstorm conditions move into the region.

The tornado watch replaces an earlier severe thunderstorm watch that covered the county.

The National Weather Service implemented the tornado watch until at least 10 p.m.

An earlier advisory from the agency said "the primary risk is large hail, damaging winds, and lightning."

"Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce tornadoes with little or no advanced warning. Residents should remain aware for threatening weather conditions and possible warnings," it said.

The NWS earlier warned that incoming storm cells could produce hourly rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches, with higher rain totals in isolated areas.

When Will The Storms Start?

An updated NWS timeline puts thunderstorms arriving during the start of the afternoon commute around 4 p.m. and staying in the region through at least 10 p.m.

Damaging wind gusts potentially coming in with a force of more than 60 mph also remain a concern for authorities.

Between the heavy rainfall bursts and strong winds, meteorologists have warned of possible downed trees and power lines.

Commuters are being urged to be cautious and avoid driving through any flooded roadways.
