Substantial Transmission In MOCO Continues Through The Weekend

The number of COVID-19 cases in MOCO kept it in the category of substantial transmission. An indoor mask mandate went into effect Saturday.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — The county has had enough reported COVID-19 cases to put it in the "substantial transmission" category since last Wednesday, according to Montgomery County's data, which triggered the reinstatement of a mask mandate last week.

County Executive Marc Elrich pointed out on Twitter Sunday night that the number of reported cases had been in the triple digits since Thursday.

Monday, Aug. 9 - 87 cases (as of 11:30 a.m.)

Substantial transmission is 50 to 99 cases per week per 100,000 people, according to the CDC. Montgomery County has a population of 1.05 million, meaning about 75 cases per day for a seven-day period or 525 cases in a week will keep the county in the designation of substantial transmission.

County leaders are asking the public to get the vaccine — 63.7 percent of people in the county are fully vaccinated, compared to the roughly 50 percent of people nationwide who are vaccinated.

Pleas have come from the state's capital, too, with Gov. Larry Hogan telling people to "get the damn vaccine."
