 AAUW LOBBY CORPS

The Anne Arundel County Branch of AAUW held it March meeting on Monday the 11th. We were honored to have Dr. Patricia Stocker the President of Maryland AAUW in attendance. The presentation covered the work of the five members of our Branch who along with members from other branches in Maryland and Virgina lobby congress on issues related to women.

Past lobbying efforts have led to the passage of the Lilly Ledbettor Act which was passed in January 2009. It restored the time that a person has to file for discrimination to 180 days after finding out about pay inequity. This was the first bill signed by President Obama. The Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization was passed February 28, 2013 and was signed into law on March 7th.The bill first passed in 1994. It needs reauthorization every five years (although it is frequently longer than five years between votes). AAUW members were active in lobbying for the passage of Title IX.
