In 2012, the local Maryland Magic 10U fast-pitch softball team compiled an overall record of 76-8 as they won 10 out of 11 tournaments entered during the season, with wins at the Maryland State Championships and PONY National Championships. The Magic also ended their season by finishing 13th out of 47 teams as they competed in the ASA National Championships in Indiana. This season, the Maryland Magic now competes in the 12U Division and so far, they are showing the same determination and dominance that they showed in 2012, with a season-opening win-loss record of 17-1.

On April 7, 2013, The Maryland Magic outlasted 19 other teams to notch their first tournament championship of the season at the PONY- sanctioned “Orange Crush Spring Qualifier” in Wilmington, DE.  At last weekend’s USSSA-sanctioned “Worth Spring Slam” tournament, held in Ellicott City, the Maryland Magic outlasted 14 other teams to win their second consecutive tournament championship of the year.

In their semi-final game against an older, seasoned PA Poison team, Severna Park Middle School 6th grader Campbell Kline pitched 7 regulation innings as well as 4 international tie-break-rules overtime innings to defeat the Poison 5-4.  Thirty minutes later, Campbell pitched in the tournament championship game, defeating the Delaware Storm 7-0.  After pitching 17 straight innings, Campbell said, “I’m hungry can we go out to dinner?”

“The semi final game was like nothing any of us had ever experienced in any game to date”, said Assistant Coach Dan Kline.  “The range of emotions was crazy; just when you thought your team was going to win, you didn’t.  Then your team’s on the ropes trying to hold on for the four additional innings.  It was incredibly draining and for the girls to pull out the win and have the drive and energy to finish with a shut out in the championship game is just overwhelming”.

Magic Head Coach Greg Allender, who has coached the girls for 2 seasons, said, “Anytime I start to think we may not pull one out, the girls find a way.  The spirit and fight these girls have never ceases to amaze me! Incredible!”   Maryland Magic teammates come from all over Anne Arundel County, as well as from the Baltimore metro area. In addition to Severna Park’s Kline, the team includes: Alex Robinson, Caroline Wasko (Crofton), Taylor Conley (Severn), Taylor Liguori, Angela Sena (Columbia), Haley Downin, Kelsey Bolling, Jordan Johnson (Pasadena) and Paige Allender (Bel Air).  The Maryland Magic play year-round in elite A-level tournaments in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Check them out at Marylandmagic.org

Congratulations Magic on a great start to your season!
