Severn Fellow Presentations: 5/23
Everyone's invited to a special evening presentation by this year's Severn Fellows: Thursday, May 23 @ 7:00p in McCleary Student Center. A reception will immediately follow in the Gallery. Severn School Fellows are a select group of seniors who have transcended the academic program by dedicating themselves to a year-long intellectual pursuit that reflects their growing passions. This year's Fellows are:
- Allie Bennett '13 and Claire Wyatt '13 - Organic Farming Documentary
- Chloe Fu '13 - Design & Product Development of Original Idea
- Alec Green '13 - Composition & Performance of Original Music
- Jack Hiltabidle '13 - Design & Creation of an Electric Guitar
- Anne McGarvey '13 - Severn's Environmental Influence on the Severn River
- Veronica Pierce '13 - Ecosystem Effects of Shark Finning
- Connor Sheehan '13 - Preventing Brain Tissue Scarring
Initiated in 2008, Fellows are encouraged to demonstrate their ability to synthesize ideas and to create new fields of inquiry in the application of several skills and knowledge bases that they have developed in their time at Severn. The Fellows are selected through an application process in the spring of their junior year and work on their projects throughout their senior year. They work with a mentor, often from outside Severn School, who is familiar with their field of inquiry. At the end of the year, they present their work to the Severn community. Severn Fellows enter into this experience with the understanding that their project will receive neither a grade nor academic credit; they explore their passions in the purest of regards and know that the most satisfying reward comes in meeting goals and in knowing that they have done something well. The presentations at the end of the Fellows year, then, simply represent the belief that knowledge and experience once gained, should be celebrated and shared.
