Community Corner

Shoe Recycle Drive at Folger McKinsey Elementary

Folger McKinsey Elementary School’s two Girls on the Run (GOTR) teams have been inspired to give back to their community with a fun and rewarding project of collecting gently-used shoes for those in need.  Running shoes, boots, sandals, flip-flops - all shoes in youth and adult sizes are being collected beginning Monday May 13 through Sunday May 19. With the help of the Good Neighbors Group of Severna Park, the shoe collection will benefit those in need, in and around Anne Arundel County and Baltimore and they will reach as far as Honduras.

Shoes that are not in condition for wear will be recycled to create material for playground and other surfaces. Collection bins are located in Folger’s lobby and outside the cafeteria. There will be a final collection at the “5K at Folger & Hoot Scoot Fun Run” on Sunday, May 19. To register for the Folger 5K run, please visit WWW.ACTIVE.COM and search for FOLGER.

The mission of GOTR, a non-profit positive youth development program for girls in third through eighth grade, is “to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.” Each season culminates with an exciting 5K running event which instills these girls with a sense of accomplishment like no other. Several of the lessons in the GOTR curriculum involve implementing a community impact project to emphasize the important role we all play in our community. That is why Folger’s teams decided to unite and carry out this project. If you know a girl who would benefit from GOTR in this area please visit http://gotrchesapeake.org.
