SILVER SPRING, MD — An engineer from Montgomery County came forward as the person who purchased the winning Powerball ticket worth $50,000 from a Silver Spring beer and wine store, according to a release.

The man told lottery officials that bought the $2 quick-pick ticket at Old World Favorites at 3854 International Drive for the Dec. 5 Powerball drawing. Later, at his Silver Spring home, he checked his ticket using the Maryland Lottery app and discovered it was a third-tier winner.

“My wife was a little more excited than me. I was in total shock and speechless,” the man said.

When the winning ticket-holder spoke to lottery officials at their Baltimore headquarters, he said his wife buys several lottery tickets every week, which is much more than he does. He plans to share his winnings with her, though.

“I guess my money is really her money,” he said.

The couple plans to put most of the $50,000 in the bank but use some of it to pay for a vacation.

“We are going to keep playing,” the winner said. “We hope to come back after we win the full jackpot next time.”
