$50K Lottery Win Goes To Silver Spring Student's Tuition, Charity
Along with paying for tuition, the UMD student from Silver Spring says a 'significant portion' of her lottery winnings will go to charity.
SILVER SPRING, MD — A 21-year-old University of Maryland student from Silver Spring is $50,000 richer, thanks to a recent lottery win.
The infrequent player, whose identity hasn't been released by Maryland lottery officials, purchased the winning Powerball ticket in the Nov. 27 drawing.
Last month, she and her father swung by Seminary Beer, Wine & Deli on Georgia Avenue to buy lottery tickets, hoping for a prize that would pay for their takeout dinner.

"When my dad told me that I'd won $50,000, I didn't believe it," she told state lottery officials. "He showed me the readout on the scanner and I almost screamed."
She tried to contain her excitement. But the Silver Spring resident had trouble even walking to the car.

"I wasn't even walking, just a long series of little jumps," she added. "I was so excited!"
When asked what she'd do with her newfound wealth, the college student told lottery officials that she'd pay for her tuition, and then give a "significant portion of her winnings" to charity.
"This is an amazing blessing. Sharing it with people in need is a way to thank God for it," the lucky winner said.
